Winter Fun in Wolfeboro

When people think of NH's Lakes Region they think of summer, boating, and swimming. But winter offers outdoor recreation when the snow piles up and the cold weather stays around. Snowmobiling on Lake Winnipesaukee is much fun for sledding enthusiasts. The expansive open space allows for high speeds which is not possible on twisting and turning busy snowmobile trails. In addition, when the whole lake is safely frozen over riders can sled to lake towns for food and shopping. There is an incredible snowmobiling trail system throughout the state. Many trails in the Lakes Region offer scenic mountain and lake views.

If snowmobiling isn't your thing, there is cross-country and alpine skiing. Wolfeboro has a gem of a cross-country ski trail. Located in Sewall Woods the trails meander through a quiet wooded part of town.

Abenaki Ski Area is a community run ski area that was started in 1936. It is a fun family oriented place that is close to downtown Wolfeboro.

Gunstock Resort in Gilford on the Belknap Mountains is a ski area with views of the Lake Winnipesaukee. Located just 35 minutes from Wolfeboro allows for an easy drive to the mountain for a day of skiing.

Many years ago the Lakes Region was very quiet after the fall foliage season was over. But now that is not the case. Most restaurants and shops are open year round. As a year round resident of Wolfeboro for over twenty years I have seen the transformation from a sleepy winter town to a town that is busy year round. So that means it is a place to visit year round. While most people think only of Northern New Hampshire for skiing and as a winter destination, which it most certainly is, the Lakes Region has much to offer in different setting and a smaller scale. These are shots of winter fun in the Wolfeboro area. After a fun day in the snow you can enjoy aperitifs and delightful food at many of Wolfeboro's restaurant choices.
